Elmira Economic Opportunity Program
Project Leaders: Jessica DeRyke '15
In partnership with the Elmira Economic Opportunity Program, Elmira College Enactus has created a self-sustainable 3-on-3 basketball league. Twice a month, Chemung County residents ages 10 and up are invited to play at the EOP's Ernie Davis Community Center, located in downtown Elmira. These games take place every other Friday night, providing a safe alternative to other weekend activities. Participation in organized athletics also teaches children and teens the importance of cooperation, perseverance and commitment. Plans for the league include hosting members of the Elmira College Men's Varsity Basketball Team, and providing skills camps and other educational activities outside of basketball.
The Elmira Economic Opportunity Program oversees a number of important programs throughout Chemung County, including Literacy Volunteers, Head Start, and operation of the Ernie Davis Community Center. In order to provide funding for these programs, the EOP has established an annual Jazz Event each summer. Last year, musician Marcus Johnson headlined the inaugural event, and is renewing his commitment to the Elmira area by agreeing to appear again this year. Enactus has been working with the EOP to develop strategic partnerships and marketing plans to increase attendance and overall profit from the event. Plans include the use of social media tools such as Hootsuite, and developing corporate packages.
